Arranged by the chore
Nobody wakes up wanting a vacuum cleaner. They want the hallway to stop looking like that.

Nobody wants a vacuum cleaner
Shops for this sort of thing are laid out by department, one aisle per kind of machine. That is how a buying team thinks about it. It is not how anybody standing in their own hallway on a Saturday thinks about it.
So every machine here is introduced by the chore it takes off you. The specification is still there, underneath, because at some point you do need to know whether the suction is enough. But the job comes first.
The test a machine has to pass
One test: does it remove a job that comes round every week, and does it do it well enough that you would not go back to doing it the old way? A machine that only helps when you are already in the mood to clean is not much help.
Every figure printed here comes from the manufacturer. Where we do not have one, nothing is printed rather than something estimated – which is why some lists are shorter than others.
